Comparison Of Beowulf And The Rancher Dan Evans - 1462 Words

A vast variety of heroes have made their way through literature and modern culture, some following the model of the ideal, stereotypical hero, and others differing from the norm and achieving heroism through other means. This variation of heroism is represented through characterizing traits that, although similar for most, are unique for some non-conforming heroes. Throughout the poem Beowulf and the movie 3:10 to Yuma, the two protagonists both possess numerous qualities befitting of a hero. However, the difference between the heroism of the famous Anglo Saxon hero, Beowulf, in the poem Beowulf and the rancher Dan Evans from 3:10 to Yuma is thoroughly emphasized through three mutual traits: bravery, confidence and determination. The portrayal of bravery as a heroic quality in Beowulf differs from that of Dan Evans’ in numerous ways. Being the traditional, valiant hero, Beowulf’s bravery is unmatched among the thanes of Heorot and he leaps at the chance to slay the ter rible monster Grendel. Described as a â€Å"brave thane of the Geats† (Beowulf 2), Beowulf’s strength and daring spirit is demonstrated with his admirable feats of bravery, including â€Å"[destroying] five a family of giants† and â€Å"[slaying] monsters on the waves† (372). Beowulf’s daring exploits leads him to challenge Grendel in single combat in order to slay the terrorizing beast. He expresses his courage and confidence through his boast, stating that he considered himself â€Å"[†¦] no less brave than Grendel himself/

Joan Of Arc Essays (2112 words) - , Term Papers

Joan Of Arc Joan of Arc (From Harper's Weekly, 1896) The historical novel is one of those flexible inventions which can he fitted to the mood or genius of any writer, and can be either story or history in the proportion he prefers. Walter Scott, who contrived it, tested its elasticity as fully as any of the long line of romancers who have followed him in every land and language. It has been a favorite form with readers from the first, and it will be to the last, because it gives them the feeling that to read so much about people who once lived and figured in human events is not such a waste of time as to read of people who never lived at all, or figured in anything but the author's fancy. With a race like ours, which always desires a reason, or at least an excuse, for enjoying itself, this feeling no doubt availed much for fiction, and helped to decide the fate of the novel favorably when its popularity was threatened by the good, stupid Anglo-Saxon conscience. Probably it had the largest share in establishing fiction as a respectable literary form, and in giving it the primacy which it now enjoys. Without the success of the monstrous fables which the gentle Sir Walter palmed off upon his generation in the shape of historical fiction, we should hardly have revered as masters in a beautiful art the writers who have since swayed our emotions. Jane Austen, Miss Edgeworth, Hawthorne, Thackeray, George Eliot, Mr. Henry James, might have sought a hearing from serious persons in vain for the truth that was in them if the historical novel had not established fiction in the respect of our race as a pleasure which might be enjoyed without self- reproach, or as the sugar of a pill which would be none the less powerful in its effects upon the system because it was agreeable to take. It would be interesting to know, but not very pertinent to inquire, how far our great humorist's use of the historical form in fiction was prompted by love of it, or by an instinctive perception that it wa s the only form in which he could hope to deliver a message of serious import without being taken altogether in jest. But, at any rate, we can be sure that in each of Mark Twain's attempts of this sort, in the Prince and the Pauper, in the Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and in the Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, he was taken with the imaginative -- that is to say, the true -- nature of his theme, and that he made this the channel of the rich vein of poetry which runs through all his humor and keeps it sound whether it is grotesque or whether it is pathetic in effect. The first of these three books is addressed to children, but it is not children who can get the most out of it; the last is offered to the sympathy and intelligence of men and women, and yet I should not be surprised if it made its deepest and most lasting appeal to the generous heart of youth. But I think that the second will remain the enduring consolation of old and young alike, and will be ranged in this respect and as a masterpiece of humor beside the great work of Cervantes. Since the Ingenious Gentleman of La Mancha there is nothing to compare with the Yankee at the Court of King Arthur, and I shall be very much disappointed in posterity if it does not agree with me. In that colossally amusing scheme, that infinitely suggestive situation, the author was hampered by no such distinct records as he has had to grapple with in his Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc. He could launch himself into a realm of fable and turn it into fact by virtue of his own strong and vivid reality while in a scene whose figures and events are all ascertained by history his fancy has had to work reversely, and transmute the substance into the airy fabric of romance. The result will not be accepted without difficulty by

The Benefits of Artificial Insemenation in Beef Cattle essays

The Benefits of Artificial Insemenation in Beef Cattle essays The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service defines Artificial Insemination as the procedure of collecting semen form the male of a species and transferring it to the female reproductive tract so that conception can take place. Artificial Insemination is used throughout the world for many purposes ranging from production agriculture to preventing extinction of endangered animals. The use of this practice is not limited to cows, pigs, and horses, but is used in zoos and other exotic breeding programs on including water buffalo, elephants, and ferrets. Artificial Insemination gives a beef producer the opportunity to use a bull possessing superior genetics on their breeding operation. Depending on the goals of an individuals program, A.I. offers a feasible solution to increasing productivity without sacrificing huge investments. Success in an Artificial Insemination program, however, does require attention to detail in the management and production of a herd. There are several steps to establishing an Artificial Insemination breeding program. These steps include record keeping, heat detection, estrus synchronization, sire selection, and the insemination procedure itself. These procedures, combined with sound herd management practices such as herd health, can allow the producer to reap numerous benefits. Just like any other agricultural practice, Artificial Insemination has had many years of development and research, over three centuries to be exact. Artificial Insemination was haphazardly discovered by Arabian horse breeders in the 1400s. By using a sponge, they took semen for a stud and inserted into a vagina of a mare in heat. Over the next 300 years, many trial and error periods took place. In 1780, Spallanzani, an Italian physiologist, first documented the use of AI on dogs and amphibians. In 1914, a Russian scientist named Ivanoff developed a method of retrieving semen by us...

8 simple ways to have more meaningful conversations

8 simple ways to have more meaningful conversations Some people are born great communicators, while others might spend a lot of their time planning out what to say, and when to say it. Starting up a new conversation and being able to keep someone engaged could take a lot of mental energy if you’re an introvert. Even worse, not being able to keep the conversation going can result in you being labeled as boring, or rude. There are some major points that you need to know before engaging in a professional conversation. Knowing these tactics of conversation will not only help you in keeping an exhcnage going, but you would also be able to communicate in a more meaningful way.If you suffer from social anxiety, these helpful tips will help you manage your conversation anticipation and improve your social skills. Start to implement techniques like:1. Be an active listenerMore often than not, the main reason some of us are at a loss for words is that we’re not paying attention when another person is speaking. Always make sure you ’re actively listening in order to carry on the conversation.Listening intently to what is being said will help you in having a better understanding of the topic being discussed. As a result, you can make points in your mind and maybe pull some references to help you steer things in a direction that makes to you.2. Ask questionsThe best way of letting the other person know that you are paying attention is by asking them questions. Drill down on things that you find interesting, before forming your final thoughts and opinions regarding what is being discussed.3. Offer suggestionsIf someone comes to you for guidance, make sure you provide them with helpful advice. Try being empathetic and put yourself in the other person’s shoes. For example, if you find yourself speaking to Japanese natives often, you might want to invest some time in learning Japanese.8. Use their name occasionallyIt’s been psychologically proven that when you call someone by their name, they listen to you more attentively. So, make use of this strategy in order to ensure that the next person is following closely what you are saying. So, start practicing these tactics now for worthwhile discussions!About the Author:Lara Smith has worked for Wall Street English for 20 years. Essay paper of Ethical Reasoning in Business Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Paper of Ethical Reasoning in Business - Essay Example This is by treating its workers well. In any given society, for purposes of avoiding chaos, there is a need of developing a system, that will help in defining what is right and what is wrong. This system must also provide guidance on how to punish anybody found engaging in an activity that is wrong. This is an aspect of ethics. On most occasions, this concept of ethics has varied, and this is because different factors play a role in its definition. Furthermore, one ethical activity may not be considered as ethics, in another community or society. This concept of ethical philosophy normally involves the identification of the right and wrong activities, and outlining them in a system, that would act as guidance to the targeted people. The principles of ethical philosophy denote that there is a need of defending the concepts of ethics that have been identified, and recommending their adoption and use, to the communities (Rosenbaum 45). Apple Inc. operates a manufacturing branch in China and it is in this location where it is able to manufacture iPhones and iPads. Majority of these workers, normally work under hazardous and brutal conditions, and they do not have any proper facilities that can protect while engaging in the production of these gadgets (Islam, 54). This is a clear violation of a code of conduct that requires companies to provide their employees with proper materials that can be used for purposes of protecting them from harm, in circumstances where they are engaged in the operations of the organization. Because of this unethical practice, there has been an increase in explosions, and deaths within the premises of the factory (Islam, 57). Therefore, it is possible to denote that workers are not safe, when they are working for Apple Inc at their factory. The shareholders and the managers of the business organization are

Statistics for managers individual work wk9 Coursework

Statistics for managers individual work wk9 - Coursework Example The high prices houses are said to be determined by the number of bedrooms, the age of the house, and the number of the bathrooms and their quality. The closeness to the cosmopolitan cities and the shabby (Byers et al 1997). The average selling prices of the houses in USA is also determined by other factor like the prestige associated by the locality of the house. A survey conducted on the Public opinion polls measure not only acceptance of the selling prices of the houses in USA by the citizens, but also public opinion on a wide range of social and economic issues that attribute to the prices of the houses. Public opinion is a critical force in shaping and transforming society most on the matter that influence and affect the public in general. Through opinion research, the public, the media and other interested groups have access to accurate measures of public attitudes and intentions on the issue of the selling prices of the houses. Sociologists can follow shifts of opinion on the major social problems and chart the evolution of the values. And citizens can now make themselves be heard at all times and compare their own view with those of others (Byers et al 1997). There seems to be two groups of academic researchers, in which one continues to support the high selling prices of the houses in USA and its positive impact to the economy, they believe that the main purposes of investment in real estate business is to improve real economic value. It is also agreed that housing leads to improvement in productivity, innovation, and job creation in every field of economy (Kraemer and Dedrick 1996; Agarwal, 1997; Shin 1999; Gray et al, 2000; Lee & Bose 2002; Laudon and Laudon, 2011; and Gecti and Dastan, 2013). The other group criticizes the bad impact of high selling prices of the houses on ecomony and the fact that high selling prices lead to development of low house quality leading to

How far does Pentheus Essay Example for Free

How far does Pentheus Essay At the beginning of the play I think I would be inclined to agree that Pentheus deserves his punishment but by the end after we are shown the way that Dionysus reacts to him and how his punishment is completed, I would probably say he does not deserve the punishment he was given. In my opinion it was vile and unnecessary but the ancient Greeks took the Gods will very seriously and the fact that a King was not welcoming to a new god, seemingly insulted them and thus forced Dionysus to exact revenge upon him. At the start when Pentheus enters he declares that he has heard rumours that this new god is driving the women to leave their homes and have criminal actions. He says his worshippers are frolicking and satisfying the lusts of men. He is basing these blames purely on rumour and even calls Dionysus a parvenu god. He is not respecting the new god and even though he knows the gods can punish humans, he still refuses to worship him; he even states that he will leave him out of his worship when he goes to sleep. He calls him some foreigner and disrespects him by saying he is a wizard conjuror and had fragrant golden curls, not meaning to compliment him but insult him. Here perhaps he does deserve his punishment because he is disrespectful and unkind to the new god because he is a cynical ruler. Cadmus and Tiresias encourage Pentheus to allow Dionysuss worship into the city but here will listen to none of it and he is rude to both of them (which again, is not expected of a king but his pride and arrogance overpowers his respect for his elders). He has absolutely no piety towards Dionysus and insults him once he is brought (in disguise) to Pentheus. He is given many warnings by Dionysus but Pentheus chooses not to hear then and ignores him, he is spoken to in riddles but Pentheus once again shows no understanding and Pentheus even goes as far as mocking Zeus and this makes us pity him because he does not understand what is going on. In this instance I do not believe he deserves his punishment. He doesnt believe in Dionysus and his obsession with order proves his downfall, in spite of the warnings he is given. Later in the play Dionysus has the upper hand by hypnotising Pentheus and forcing him to see a bull and trying to tie it up. Here we begin to feel sorry for Pentheus and think that it is cruel of Dionysus to trick him. There is a contrast between the rage and frustration of Pentheus and the calmness of Dionysus. A herald comes and tells Pentheus about the worship of the Bacchants and Dionysus is quick to trick him to witness it himself, he is lured like a child and is easily persuaded by Dionysus because he is still hypnotised by him. Because he becomes so child-like and vulnerable our pity for him increases because he is unable to control his actions from here on. I do not believe he deserves his fate now because he is lured by Dionysus charm and he has put all of his trust into the gods hands. We feel sorry for Pentheus here and because he is more innocent here (is persuaded to dress up as a bacchant) and does not deserve this cruel punishment Dionysus has planned for him. Dionysus now becomes the cruel one and plays with Pentheus vulnerable state and mentions sick jokes towards his death by saying you shall ride home in your mothers arms. Which is terrible dramatic irony and we are forced to feel compassionate towards Pentheus because we know exactly what is going to happen to him. Because it is his mother that is going to kill him, I believe he does not deserve to be killed like this, but by his mother killing him it forces us to take more pity on Pentheus and Agave and I do not believe he deserves his punishment like this. It just proves the malice of Dionysus and how far he will go to induce punishment on the city of Thebes in order to be worshipped. So Pentheus deserves his punishment because he was unwilling to accept a new god and refused to worship someone he did not believe in and this resulted in his death but he did not deserve the way in which he was punished because it was his mother who was forced to do it and he was brutally ripped apart while in a child-like state of mind and under Dionysus control. So we feel sympathy towards him and I do not believe he deserved his punishment

Anti-Hemp Legalization :: Hemp Marijuana Drugs Essays

Anti-Hemp Legalization The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 was the first ban on hemp in the United States. Then in 1942 the government lifted the ban and encouraged farmers to cultivate hemp to help with the war effort. The ban was later put into effect again in 1957. The ban of hemp in America is still in effect by the Controlled Substances Act of 1972. Hemp or cannabis sativa is the same species as marijuana. It is impossible to grow hemp without the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) rich leaves and seeds. While the leaves and seeds can contain up to 30 percent THC, the hemp stalk and roots contain less than one percent. Therefore the government has kept the plant banned in the country. With the ban, the government keeping the upper hand on the â€Å"War on Drugs† in America, protecting the youth from the illegal substance marijuana, and keeping wealthy corporations in their pockets. Many Drug Enforcement Agency members say â€Å"Advocates for hemp legalization argue that US drug laws could be amended to allow the growing of cannabis for industrial hemp, but keeping marijuana growing illegal. Drug and law enforcement agencies, however, maintain that marijuana growers would be able to hide their cannabis plants among the legal hemp plants and it would be impossible for narcotics agents to distinguish the two† (Domke). The government keeps hemp illegal from fear of easy marijuana access and growing capabilities in the hemp fields. Marijuana could easily be grown in hemp fields because of how much shorter a marijuana plant is compared to a hemp plant. The hemp would canopy the illegal substance making it hard for DEA officials to spot potential marijuana growing. The DEA searches potential marijuana fields from a helicopter, and if you have hemp fields growing, there would be no way for them to see if there were any marijuana plants growing beneath them, making the process of growing marijuana much easier and much larger. If hemp was legal there would be an overwhelming amount of marijuana flooding the streets making the authority’s job of keeping America’s streets drug free. The government’s main goal in keeping hemp illegal is to save the youth of America from corruption and abuse. If hemp were to be legalized, the children in America would be exposed to the drug marijuana at an earlier age then now. Statistics show that marijuana use at a young age can ruin ones life in the long run.

Construction Process

INTRODUCTION Construction is a vast process where a lot of obstacles are faced. It can be because of the conditions of the terrain where a construction is on-going or because of the nature of the construction itself which causes the difficulties. So to overcome some of these or most of it there is always surveys done before a construction is started. Therefore a survey is a part of the construction process. And these surveys can be of different types depending on the situation of the construction process for example the surveys done before the start of the construction and at the surveys during the construction and after finishing the construction varies hence the purpose of these surveys as well as the instruments and the procedures for the surveys varies. Since then it is important to know some of the obstacles which we face at the different faces of constructions and how we deal with them to bring a solution to make the process of construction easier and safer. This assignment is a partial fulfilment of the Geomatic Engineering (ECV 3213) coursework, this will cover an explanatory report on how to overcome the obstructions to horizontal distance measurement using tape, permanent tests and adjustments for accuracy in theodolite, digital terrain modelling and verticality check / control for multi-story building works during construction. The report will discuss three examples of obstructions to horizontal distance measurement while using tape and how it is dealt to overcome this or solutions for these obstructions. For the permanent tests and adjustments for accuracy in theodolite, the collimation in azimuth, the spire and plate level tests will be taken as consideration and deliberated. Also more explanations on the remaining two items will be discussed. In the report purpose of the instruments or methods used, the procedures, the advantages and disadvantages, some practical applications with examples will be discussed. Further more relevant illustrations and sk etches will be included. The aim of the assignment is to carry out a literature search and read about the above mentioned four important items in the field of surveying and learn and understand the significance of these for the construction process hence for the surveying. The objective is to give the readers a clear cut Image of the topics and how it is practically applied in the field and provide the readers with relevant and understandable information.

Americanization in Poland

These days in Poland we can notice that the process of Americanization has proceeded. Every step we take, we face the influence of the American culture in our country and it does not surprise anybody or we do not even surmise that we take part in this phenomenon. Firstly, I have noticed that more than 90% of the music I listen to is in English. Even if the bands come from Sweden or Hungary the lyrics of their songs are still in English, usually in American English. Some people say that it overshadows Polish music a bit but it also makes us study the language to understand foreign lyrics. What is more, most of the movies I watch are American. They are from Hollywood and the cast of each movie is also American. It makes our national movies look a bit poorer than these from the USA but we have to admit that some of the American motion pictures are astonishing. However, really bad tendency is that we eat more and more junk food. Fast-foods are tasty but really unhealthy, full of carbohydrates and fats which in too big amounts can be dangerous for our lives. All in all, the phenomenon of Americanization is present in Poland. Its’ influence on our culture is huge but we can not define it as unequivocally good or unequivocally bad. It has a lot of good aspects but also many disadvantages. Tomasz Tomaszewski photo exhibition â€Å"Rzut beretem† Every young person who likes photography should visit the photo exhibition of Tomasz Tomaszewski called â€Å"Rzut beretem† which can be seen in CK Zamek in PoznaÅ„ from the 6th to the 26th of February, 2009. It is the summary of all the photographer’s work that he did in 2008 when he was traveling around Poland. As soon as we enter the hall of CK Zamek, we can notice that all the photographs are black and white. That discoloration was done deliberately to make the photos look more amazing and to present the topic of the exhibition as best as possible. All of the 60 most interesting photographer’s pictures show the forgotten places in Poland such as old villages, homesteads, etc. It refers to the name of the exhibition, which means that the places shown on the pictures seem to people who live in the city to be far away from them but the truth is that they are nearby being undiscovered and underestimated. Photographs presented on the exhibition are of incredibly high quality, the contrast is also high and the frames are considered, they were not made accidentally but to present the photographer’s point of view. I recommend this exhibition to every young people interested in photography. â€Å"Rzut beretem† is worth seeing it to discover the forgotten and underestimated places in Poland.

Encounter with the Indians

Encounter with the Indians Father Paul le Jeune provides a detailed description of the Savages religion, their virtues and vices. According to Jeune, the Savages have a well-developed system of religious beliefs, although they confess they do not know who has created the world and how it was created (23). Jeune claims that, despite numerous beliefs and religious principles followed by the Savages, their religion is nothing but a prayer (23). He compares the Savages religion to superstition and does not take it seriously.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Encounter with the Indians specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Much more serious is Jeunes description of the Savages virtues and vices. He starts with the analysis of their physical attributes. Savages are presented as strong, erect, tall, and well proportioned (23). Among others, Jeune points to the goodness of the Savages mind (24). Unlike the civilized Europeans, the Savages are not ruled by av arice and ambition, and this is why they can be considered as happy. They pretend that they cannot get angry, simply because they do not want to spoil their happiness with anger (Jeune 24). The author even suggests that the Savages are so patient and modest, that the civilized world should be ashamed of it. These people are closely attached to one another, although they have numerous vices and imperfections. Jeune claims that the Savages are proud and haughty (25). They do not know anything about compassion and are not moved by others sufferings. They are also prone to deceive one another: lying for a Savage is almost the same as talking (Jeune 26). They do not know anything about truth and secrets. They do not know which information should be kept private and which should be shared with others. They do not welcome those, who are not part of their unity and do not encourage anyone to interfere with their tranquility and peace. The Trail of Tears In his letter, Ross provides argument s against the removal of the Cherokee from their land. At the heart of his argument is the claim that the Cherokee people have gone a long way to a higher social status. They had to abandon their savage habits and beliefs. Ross supports the legitimacy of the agreement made between the Cherokee people and the government, and he is confident that the provisions of this agreement cannot be violated. In Rosss view, the Cherokee nation is legally free to live on their land. It is the land where they have managed to accumulate considerable material belongings. The removal of the Cherokee from their land would become a betrayal and a measure of the low reliability of the governments promises. At the same time, Ross lists the obstacles facing him in the removal of the Cherokee people to the West, chief among others being the scantiness of the food ration provided to the native people (28). Ross also refers to the irregular nature of the proceedings that were guaranteed under the contract ma de with the government. The quality of the food provided is poor, and it comes as no surprise that the Cherokee refuse to accept and use it.Advertising Looking for essay on history? Let's see if we can help you! Ross fears that, very soon, the native people will find themselves at the edge of hunger. He reports the numerous health and wellbeing problems that demand an instant remedy; otherwise, the people, who have been moved to the new land, will hardly have a chance for survival. Letters from Black Union Soldiers The letters sent by the African American Union soldiers reveal the hopes and concerns they had regarding their obligations and social position during the war. One the one hand, African American soldiers were proud of being an essential part of the war for freedom. They were almost unanimous in their commitment to the goals and principles of the Union Army. On the other hand, it was not uncommon for the Black soldiers to express dissatisfaction with the way they were treated. They were not happy about the pay and compensation they received for the same set of efforts and achievements accomplished with their White compatriots. They did not like the distrust they were facing because of their skin color and origin. Nevertheless, when the number of African American soldiers reached two hundred thousand, the Union Army became a force of unbelievable power and strength. The way African American soldiers viewed their place in the society also changed. They suddenly realized that they were more powerful and skillful than they could have ever imagined. In their letters, African American soldiers share their impressions from being able to release the former slaves from the chains of oppression. They sound proud and self-confident about their ability to influence the fate of their people. Healing Wounds Cornelia Hancock tells the story of her professional and individual commitments. These commitments are not supported by her family. However, they help her realize the importance of her healing and helping strivings. Cornelia describes the ways, in which her psyche responds to the sufferings of the soldiers around her. She develops a deep sense of compassion towards the physical and emotional sufferings of the wounded soldiers. At the same time, she manages not to lose the sense of responsibility that falls on her. She compares her nursing mission among the soldiers to a shipwreck in a desert island, where the team of the living medical professionals, like surviving mariners, fight for the lives and health of their compatriots.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Encounter with the Indians specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More A s mentioned earlier, Cornelias family does not support her manlike commitment to working in the conditions of war. From her letters, it becomes clear that she constantly tries to justify her choices. She writes to her mother that her actions and obligations in the field hospital would hardly seem normal for a woman of her position at home. Still, she feels comfortable and does not want to leave. The mere fact that she has come against everyones will tells much about her strong desire to be helpful to people. Cornelia also expresses huge consolation with regard to the escaped slaves. She writes that many slaves become free, as their Army is advancing (Hancock 306). They join the Army, but their physical condition is often beyond acceptable. Cornelia views her role as a provider of quality help and compassion to the men and women, who have escaped slavery. She is ready to assist them in their journey to freedom. A Slave Insurrection Nat Turner was known for having organized one of the most sensational and, actually, productive slave uprisings in the 19th century. However, the story he shares in his interview with Thomas R. Gray sounds confusing. Thomas R. Gray, who had interviewed Turner just before his execution, sought to present his figure as a religious fanatic and a person, who was emotionally and mentally unbalanced. When it comes to the motives of the uprising, Turner speaks about his childhood and the history of his freedom philosophy. He claims that, since his earliest years, he has been extraordinarily talented and advanced. Not surprisingly, his grandmother kept telling him that he was intended for some great purpose (201). One day he heard a loud noise coming from heavens. Since then, he and his supporters had been creating and re-writing the schemes of the future uprising. When the uprising started, Turner and his team did not have any clear plans. This is, probably why the uprising organized by Turner eventually failed. The motives presented by Tho mas R. Gray also remain unclear. Most probably, Turner knew what they wanted to achieve as a result of the uprising, but Grays mission differed greatly from what his interviewee wanted to accomplish. I do not see any explicit differences within the text, but I see that the narrative report published by Thomas R. Gray creates a very controversial picture of Nat Turners figure. Given the differences in Grays and Turners views on the slave uprising, it is difficult to accept this information as trustworthy. Crossing the Continent This story is a detailed account of the ambitious journey that was accomplished by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in the 19th century. Their mission was to explore the vast unknown territories of the North American continent, their geography and plants. The two explorers describe the incident when, in August 1805, one of the teams interpreters almost capsized their canoe. The canoe was carrying numerous articles, which were indispensably essential to the e ntire group.Advertising Looking for essay on history? Let's see if we can help you! It is not difficult to imagine what Chief Cameahwait felt upon his encounter with the group of the white travelers. Most likely, he felt interest in what the newcomers wanted to show and share but remained wisely alert. At that time, the relationships between the Native Americans and the government were tense and controversial, which could readily lead to conflicts between the travelers and the natives. Still, the two explorers managed to gain almost unilateral support among the natives, by presenting them with wonderful goods and gifts, while also sharing the purpose of their explorative mission with them. Lewis and Clark told the natives of the friendly dispositions the government had towards them. They also suggested that their mission would help them discover new and more effective ways to deliver merchandize to the native tribes. They were confused and even surprised at the sexual mores that were go verning natives daily activities, where a man was allowed to have more than one wife, and where dozens of people died of the incurable venereal diseases. By the end of their mission, Lewis and Clark suddenly realized why Native Americans were so distasteful of the Spaniards. The explanation was simple: the Spanish were too discriminative in their attitudes towards the Natives, and such discrimination could never lead to the development of any productive ties between them.

People of all ages and occupations- even those with public speaking experience- feel the same way. The good news is that there are many things you can do to prepare and feel calmer during your talk. Just follow the tips below to gear up for a super performance. Tips for Presenting As with many things in life, delivering an oral report will be much easier if you take time to prepare for it. Preparation will give you confidence and help you focus on what matters when youre finally in the spotlight. Write your report to be heard, not read. There is a difference between words that are meant to be heard in your head and words that are meant to be heard out loud. Youll see this once you begin to practice what youve written, as some sentences will sound choppy or too formal.Practice your report out loud. This is very important. There will be some phrases that you will stumble over, even though they look simple. Read out loud when you practice and make changes to any phrases that stop your flow.On the morning of your report, eat something but dont drink soda. Carbonated beverages will give you dry mouth, and caffeine will affect your nerves and make you jittery. Stick to water or juice instead.Dress appropriately, and in layers. You never know whether the room will be hot or cold. Either could give you the shakes, so prepare for both.Once you stand up, take a moment to gather your thoughts or relax. Dont be afraid to give yourself a silent pause before you begin. Look through your pa per for a moment. If your heart is beating hard, this will give it an opportunity to calm down. If you do this right, it actually looks very professional, too. If you start to speak and your voice is shaky, take a pause. Clear your throat. Take a few relaxing breaths and start again.Focus on someone at the back of the room. This has a calming effect on some speakers. It may feel weird, but it doesnt look weird.Take the stage. Pretend youre a professional on TV. This gives confidence.Prepare an I dont know answer if people will be asking questions. Dont be afraid to say you dont know. You can say something like, That is a great question. Ill look into that.Have a good ending line. Avoid an awkward moment at the end by preparing a strong conclusion. Dont back away, mumbling Well, I guess thats all. Other Advice More generally, you can prepare for an oral report by deeply researching your topic and practicing your speech before a mirror or video camera. Know your topic well. If you feel confident about your knowledge, you will feel confident when it comes time to share that knowledge with others. If possible, make a practice video and watch yourself to see how you sound. Pay attention to your posture and tone of voice. If you have any nervous tics- such as saying um or ah- try to reduce them as much as you can.Dont pick the day of your report to experiment with a new style. It may give you an extra reason to feel nervous in front of a crowd.Walk up to your speaking location early to give your nerves time to calm down.
